First Ward Child Development Center
Welcome to First Ward Child Development Center!
When we first opened our doors back in February 1999, there was only one thing that we knew for sure - the people we brought on board to help us launch our endeavor all loved working with children. The fact that so many of these same people are with us so many years later is a true reflection of our overall dedication to education - and a big reason why we maintain a five-star state rating. And yet while these honors are nice, they are simply a by-product of doing what we love - working with children.
Here at First Ward, we are committed to becoming a "totally inclusive school." What this basically means is that discrimination in any form is not welcomed here. By creating an environment free from the adult conventions of bias and prejudice, FWCDC children focus on similarities between people, rather than differences. The idea is that by teaching acceptance in a highly interactive environment, children will recognize discrimination as ignorance when they inevitably face it growing up.
Total Inclusion - it's an idea we epitomize in our slogan, "Open Arms Open Minds."
Thanks again for visiting. If you're in the Uptown area, give us a call and drop by for a quick tour, or you can email me directly at etoliver_fwcdc.org.
Welcome to First Ward CDC. I'm glad you stopped by.

First Ward Child Development Center opened on February 1, 1999, as a joint venture between the Charlotte Housing Authority and P.M.L.M. Master Yield Development Corporation. The Charlotte Housing Authority goal of making First Ward a mixed-income community was to be reflected in the makeup of children served by the child care center.
First Ward CDC currently holds a five-star rating from the State of North Carolina, and our main considerations include:
1) the health and safety of children,
2) a proportionate number of staff members to the number of children,
3) staff education,
4) play and learning spaces, and
5) educational curriculum.
First Ward CDC serves children ranging in age from six-weeks to ten years.
Our hours of operation are 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
At First Ward we have a dedicated and determined staff that does not mind going the extra mile to ensure the best experience for students and parents

After-school & Summer Camp
FWCDC's afterschool program is collectively coordinated by First Ward staff. Together we have compiled a didactic environment that implements learning activities, games, as well as functions. We uphold our motto "Open Arms Open Minds" in every way possible; Ensuring both your child(ren) and you a safe and warm place to experience during and after the school year. Our staff works closely with your child(ren) to ensure reading fluency, subject understanding, and homework completion. Come visit First Ward and see what
we are all about!

PTA
Our Mission is Simple - To be the voice of our children and to encourage and support a learning environment where parents, teachers, and the community are actively involved in the educational process empowering our children to become life-long learners. To do this, we've developed a Parent-Teacher Association to ensure that our common goals are met with concern to these issues. For the 2008-2009 school year, the following individuals are generous members of the
First Ward PTA:
Sparkle Hill, President
Tracey Bullock, Secretary
Veronica Ellis, Social Committee
Senta Dodd, Treasurer
JaQuita Tucker, Fundraising Chair
PTA meetings occur on the 3rd Thursday of every month from 5:30pm-6:30pm
We encourage all parents to become involved in the PTA - since it's something you'll have to do at the next level, and it gives you the chance to have a direct input on your child's education. In addition to the committee members listed above, we'll also recruit one parent in each room to serve as classroom representative. This person will serve as a liaison between the PTA and classroom parents and will help teacher's arrange for class parties and other activities.
